Hello everyone. In a podcast episode, I bemoaned the lack of decent games on Android phones. Due to low requirements and developers catering to the lowest common denominator, games are often riddled with ads, require an internet connection, and feature low-quality design. However, what if the games were ad-riddled and had MS Paint-quality design but worked offline? One of the top-downloaded games, 100 Offline Games, caught my eye while I was on stream. I downloaded it to test it out, and while I didn’t play every game, I tried a few to get a feel for the gameplay. It’s certainly unique.
Downloading the game is simple, but when you open the app, it prompts you to download a 0.4 GB file containing all 100+ games. This allows the games to load on your device and work offline—great for when you’re on a plane or have limited data. I’m a big advocate for software that works offline, so this is a plus. However, due to the file size, you’ll want to be on Wi-Fi or a fast data connection before downloading, especially if you have a low data cap. Once installed, the app presents you with 100 games—100 of the lowest-quality games known to man. There’s a pretty fun maze game with graphics that look like they’re straight out of MS Paint circa 1995, but it’s okay because it offers some challenge, at least for me. That said, it doesn’t tap into any advanced features. For instance, you have to turn right and left to control your ball—that’s it. There’s no tilt-to-turn function, even though that would be incredibly easy to implement.
`At least this game scales well to different screens. Other games I’ve tried didn’t scale properly, had poorly designed icons, and while the app markets itself as “offline,” if you’re online, fullscreen video ads will play between game levels. The design is atrocious. In a chess game, the pawns are about 1 cm tall, the board is roughly three inches wide, and you can barely see the pieces. Some of the “games” are ridiculous—there’s one where you just drag your finger to paint a house. That’s it!
In conclusion, if you want a collection of badly designed, sometimes laggy games that work offline and might include a few hidden gems, this mobile app is for you. I’d give it 2.5/5 stars.
