Perplexity comes to mac

Perplexity, the AI search engine and chatbot, is introducing technology that connects its online modules directly to applications on your Mac. While I’m still not entirely sure how it works in practice, the concept sounds promising. I’ve found agent-style browsing to be mixed so far—especially with Perplexity’s own “Comet” feature and Google’s Gemini—but if this new system performs well, it could become genuinely useful.
This launch caught my attention because I recently downloaded transcripts from my YouTube podcast—over 150 of them—and I’ve been looking for a way to automatically find “viral” or “clippable” moments. Manually uploading that many files to an AI service would take a lot of time and likely cost a fair amount, but technology like this could simplify the process dramatically. It reminds me of something I experimented with before, using a custom personal wiki to organize my content. Beyond that, this kind of AI integration could be great for writing, editing, and even recovering documents or photos. Smarter file search alone would be a huge improvement—no more needing to remember the exact filename. It would make your computer feel more “alive” and personally useful.
Still, data privacy, security, and accuracy will be critical. As we’ve seen, some AIs become less transparent or more restricted over time, and when they manage large sets of files and long chat histories, mistakes or confusion can easily creep in.
