Last week Samsung released the Z Fold 8, the Z Flip 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra. Here is my summary of the most innovative device Samsung has made in years: the Z Fold 8. The Z Fold 8 is a flagship phone and it’s different, some in good ways, some in not so good ways. The good:
Square design, this reminds me of a Blackberry Passport. I know we will not see any keyboard cases for it but it should be easier to type on with both hands and also use it in notebook form, kind of like the T-Mobile MDA which was a smartphone with a keyboard that has a somewhat similar aspect ratio. However the screen is an inch smaller than the average smartphone of today at 5.5 inches BUT is 3.2 inches wide which is wider than the S26 Ultra’s 3.07 inches wide. I may be in the minority on this but I would actually like a 3.5-inch S26 Ultra-esque fold but I’m glad to see some sort of innovation, especially a 4800 mAh battery which is only 100 mAh smaller than the 6.7-inch S26 Plus battery.
The phone is also only 2 millimeters thicker than that same handset. Under the hood it runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and launched with Android 17 and reviews are showing that the phone scales well to applications that normally load on ‘regular phone screens’. It’s a good PR move for Samsung who I want to innovate more and to the people who are saying that they ‘copied’ Apple…..yes Apple may release a foldable BUT IT’S NOT OUT YET YOU CAN’T COPY SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T EXIST!!!
But what they did copy Apple on is the dual camera system on a 1900 dollar phone!!! This is disgusting. I don’t care if it was 1000 dollars, maybe maybe I could accept it but honestly this would be a perfect second phone for me, a faster chip, cool pocket design for productivity, and a 4800 mAh batter which might last longer on scree on than my S24 ultra battery. I wish it supported the Spen as well. I would DEFINITELY consider this as an upgrade if it had a telephoto sensor. By the fact that a phone that is near 2000 dollars and only has 2 cameras is a move only Apple can pull off. I hope to go hands-on with the handset soon and come back for more updates on the 8 Ultra and the Z Fold 8. God bless and Tech Talk To You Later!!
