Apple today introduced Apple HomeView, a $299 smart display featuring a 7-inch Liquid Retina display, built-in spatial audio, and facial recognition for up to six household members. Powered by the A18 chip and an upgraded Siri AI, the device serves as a central hub for FaceTime, media playback, and smart home control.

“Apple HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “It recognizes your face to shift from a household screen to your own experience… all while keeping everyone’s information private and secure.”

Available in both tabletop and wall-mounted configurations, HomeView processes camera and microphone data locally via Secure Exclaves to protect user privacy. Pre-orders start today in select regions for $299, with shipping beginning November 13.

In Android news, OnePlus released a phone you may want, but sadly you cannot get it without a high price hike. The OnePlus 16 debuted in China today with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset, a 185 Hz refresh rate (for games), and 165 Hz for regular use. For context, most phones have a 60 Hz or 120 Hz screen, and the higher the rate, the smoother the screen will feel when scrolling or playing a game. The handset will run ColorOS 17, which is OnePlus’s skin for Android 17. The most massive upgrade—the one I would beg Samsung to do—is the 9,000 mAh battery, a nearly 2,000 mAh increase over last year and nearly double what Samsung offers on its Ultra phone, with 100-watt charging. It should be no slouch on the camera front (though I have not received information on the real camera performance) with a 200 MP wide-angle camera, a 50 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 50 MP telephoto camera, and a 50 MP front camera.

And we say bye-bye – to Fire OS, the Android-based OS that was on the very low-end Amazon tablets that had no official access to the Google Play Store (though I have used the workarounds). On October 8th, Amazon released new ‘Alexa’ tablets ranging from $299 to $499 USD with access to the full Google Play suite and up to 16 GB of RAM on the nearly $500 tablet, meaning better performance that is more in line with midrange tablets. Alexa+ is also included, and it can do things on-screen like adding calendar events on-screen to a calendar or searching for something to shop for. The tablet also offers a 120 Hz display. God bless and Tech Talk To You Later!!!
