Numbering a Column
To create a numbered sequence in a column:

Type the first three numbers (e.g., 1, 2, 3) in consecutive cells, as shown in Figure 1.

Select these cells, move your cursor to the bottom-right corner of the third cell (the fill handle), and drag it down the column as far as you need.
This method works for:

Incrementing by ones (1, 2, 3, …).

Negative numbers (e.g., -1, -2, -3, …).

Other increments, such as twos (2, 4, 6, …) or threes (3, 6, 9, …). To set a custom increment, enter the first two numbers reflecting the desired step (e.g., 2, 4 for twos), select them, and drag the fill handle. One neat feature I learned was that you can select all of them together and it will still count.
